Teaching the Greek Language

The Institute of Greek Language and Culture under the Auspices of the Greek Orthodox Church / Department of Education's two-year Greek language program offers adults in the Chicago, IL area an immersive learning experience. Our experienced instructors utilize a natural approach, emphasizing comprehension, vocabulary building, and grammar through engaging cultural discussions. This approach and our lesson's interactivity help our students gain fluency in modern Greek more easily.
About Our Language Program
The Institute of Greek Language and Culture under the Auspices of the Greek Orthodox Church / Department of Education is offering Adult classes of Modern Greek in three centers and online. This program uses innovative learning methods to provide residents of the Chicago Metropolitan area an opportunity to learn conversational Modern Greek simply and easily:
- Using the natural approach for quick and comprehensive learning.
- Putting emphasis on conversation, grammatical and structural forms.
- Providing cultural information to understand native speakers' mentality.
- Using target language in a class and audiovisual material.
- Having a "teacher hotline" for solving problems outside the classroom.
A Curated Path Towards Language Mastery
This two-year program offers six courses of Modern Greek, starting with two beginning course sequence 101 to 106. Students who will study in this program for two years will gain basic fluency in the language. For those students who wish to continue with their studies in Modern Greek beyond the two-year program, we offer two more years in the intermediate level (200 level courses) and then, two more years in the advanced level (300 level). In order to achieve high fluency in the language, one must study for six years at least. These courses will enable students to develop their language skills to higher-levels of fluency.
Work-Friendly Schedule
There are four nine-week sessions during the academic year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. Classes meet once a week in the evenings from 7 pm to 9pm throughout the year. Our teachers are highly qualified foreign language instructors, and they have many years of experience working with adults. This is also a preparatory program for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek / Ελληνομάθεια (all levels) as well as the State of Illinois Bilingual Certificate. Attendance is mandatory. Dues are not refundable after the first week of class.
